The Crappie Syndicate

Nobody really knows when the Syndicate started.

Some say it began on a cold morning when the lake was dead calm and the crappie wouldn't touch anything. Others swear it had been operating for years before anybody even knew its name.

One thing was certain.

When the Crappie Syndicate showed up, fish started disappearing.

It all started with Black Market.

Black Market wasn't flashy. He didn't need to be. He operated quietly, moving through brush piles, docks, and deep timber without drawing attention. If there were slabs somewhere in the lake, Black Market knew about it.

But even the boss couldn't run everything himself.

He needed somebody on the inside.

That's where Inside Job came in.

Inside Job had connections everywhere. Stake beds. Bridge pilings. Submerged timber. Places most fishermen passed without giving them a second look.

His specialty was getting close.

Real close.

By the time a crappie realized something wasn't right, the hook was already set.

For the jobs that required a little more force, Black Market had Back Alley Bug.

Nobody asked where Bug came from.

He showed up one night covered in black and copper and never left.

Bug liked the ugly places—the thick brush, dirty water, forgotten corners of the lake where big crappie went when they didn't want to be found.

If somebody needed pulled out of cover, Bug handled it.

But then the Syndicate ran into a problem.

There was a school of slabs nobody could crack.

They'd been spotted before. Guys had marked them on sonar. Boats had sat over them for hours.

Nothing.

Black Market dug through the old files until he found one folder covered in dust.

Across the front were two words:

COLD CASE.

Cold Case hadn't worked in years.

He didn't say much when Black Market called. He just showed up wearing icy blue with enough pink flash to make sure everybody knew he was back.

The case didn't stay cold for long.

That should've been the end of it.

Then Neon Vice arrived.

Vice was everything Black Market wasn't.

Loud. Flashy. Reckless.

Pink. Purple. Blue.

You could see Vice coming from across the lake.

Black Market hated the attention.

The crappie couldn't resist it.

Before long, Vice was working the bright days, stained water, and aggressive schools where keeping a low profile didn't matter.

That's when Pink Slip joined the operation.

Pink Slip didn't chase fish.

Pink Slip fired them.

One look at that hot-pink head coming through the water and another crappie was removed from the payroll.

No warning.

No severance.

Just—

terminated.

The Syndicate was growing, and that meant secrets were getting harder to keep.

Unfortunately, one member had never been particularly good at keeping his mouth shut.

They called him Loose Lips.

Loose Lips knew every brush pile on the lake.

He knew where the slabs moved after dark.

He knew which docks were holding fish.

And worst of all…

he'd tell anybody.

Black Market warned him.

Inside Job warned him.

Even Back Alley Bug told him to shut his mouth.

Didn't matter.

Loose Lips kept talking.

Then one morning the Syndicate found him dangling over a school of hungry crappie.

Black Market just shook his head.

The old saying was right.

Loose lips sink ships.

Apparently they sink slabs too.

But every organization needs somebody they can call when the plan falls apart.

For the Syndicate, that was White Lightning.

There was no sneaking around with White Lightning.

No investigation.

No setup.

You sent him in when you wanted everybody in the lake to know something was happening.

That chartreuse body hit the water like somebody flipped on a light.

Flash.

Strike.

Gone.

And that's how the operation grew.

Black Market runs it.
Inside Job gets them in.
Back Alley Bug handles the dirty work.
Cold Case finds the ones nobody else can.
Neon Vice brings the attention.
Pink Slip removes them from the payroll.
Loose Lips tells everybody where they're hiding.
And White Lightning finishes the job.

There are rumors more members are coming.

New names.

New colors.

New ways of doing business.

Black Market isn't talking.

But one thing is certain:

The Syndicate is just getting started.
